Casted Burger

Glass Casting

I made this burger with glass casting. To cast glass, you first mold what you want to make out of clay. Then, you create a plaster mold around the clay and (do your best to) remove all of the clay from the mold. After that, you can fill the mold with crushed glass and melt it all together in the kiln. Finally, you break the plaster mold off and clean off the glass.

To see another example of casting, check out the leg-kicking figurine.

This was an earlier version of the clay burger. I ended up taking off the seeds because I thought they were too big and they didn’t quite look right when they were smaller.

After making the plaster mold, I filled it with crushed glass so it was overflowing, so all of the small gaps in between the crushed glass pieces would be filled in.

You can see how much the glass melted into the mold — the extra heap of glass was certainly necessary

After taking it out of the plaster, I still had to clean it up a lot, there was some extra glass and plaster in between the burger toppings
